1. Waterproof or breathable?
A fully waterproof cover keeps rain out but can trap condensation underneath, which is bad for paint and electrics if the car stands for days. For most Indian cities a water-resistant, breathable fabric is the better all-year choice. Pick fully waterproof only for heavy-rain areas, and lift the cover on sunny days to let it dry.

Covers are sold by body type (hatchback, sedan, compact SUV, SUV, MUV) and often by model. A cover that is too big catches the wind; one that is too small strains at the mirrors. Check that it has mirror pockets and an elastic hem front and back.

In open parking the wind lifts covers and the flapping rubs the paint. Look for under-body straps or buckles and a soft inner lining. A lock-and-cable loop also stops the cover from being taken.

Silver or light-coloured outer layers reflect heat and reduce fading of paint, rubber and the dashboard. In summer, a windshield sunshade and window shades help even if you do not cover the whole car.

If you use the car every day, a full cover can be a chore. A half cover (roof and glass) is quicker to put on and still protects from sun and bird droppings.

- Wash or dust the car before covering it — dirt under a cover acts like sandpaper.
- Never cover a wet car for long; let it dry first.
- Ask the parking owner whether covers are allowed; some societies have rules for common areas.
